Nagaland is one of the eastern most states of India bordering Myanmar to its east. The state is inhabited by 16 different tribes and sub tribes, each being unique and distinct in its language, culture, food and customs. Agriculture is still the predominant occupation in this Christian state where English is widely used. The origin of Naga people and tribes is not clear and there are various theories about migration from China, Mongolia and Burma in this regard. During this holiday, we discover the culture of the region by exploring its capital Kohima along with nearby villages. We also go on an adventure with trek to the surreal 'bamboo clad' Dzukou Valley. We will then try and summit Mount Japfu (3086m), the second highest point in Nagaland. The summit gives some stunning views of Dzukou valley and Kohima . A truly breathtaking adventure holiday in Nagaland!

Trek to the surrel 'bamboo clad' Dzukou Valley
Climb Mount Japfu (3086m) , the second highest point in Nagaland
Explore Kohima and surrounding villages
We will pick you up from the airport at Dimapur
and a single group transfer at 3.30 pm will be provided to our group hotel in
Kohima. The journey will take us at least 2-3 hours. Tea will be served as you check into
the hotel. Evening is at leisure and we can head out to explore
Kohima town before. Back to the hotel for dinner and early to bed
We should be fully energized today with proper breakfast for our
trek to Dzukou Valley. We will leave our
big bags at the campsite, and only take our day bag with the necessary items we
need for the night stay at the camp. We
will then head to the village of
Vishwema, 30-40 minutes drive away, and drive up to the trekking point. The approach to the valley is a bit steep and
in dense forest till we reach the Dzukou Point where we get our first glimpse
of the bamboo clad hills of Dzukou. A 3-4
hour trek in the rolling valley of Dzukou will take us to our camp for the night.
The walk is stunning and we will stay in the dormitory in the state run guest
house in the Valley. This is also a way to support the state government and
local employment in the region. Meals will be provided as available in the
kitchen of the guest house. Spending a
night under the star filled sky in this landscape is an experience to remember.
It will be quite cold at night, so don't forget to pack your warm clothes.
You can get up early morning,
and leave for a walk in the valley. A great chance to see crystals frozen on
the leaves of the bamboo shoots. After breakfast and taking in the morning
views of the Valley, we pack up and head back via different route to Jakhama
Village. We meet up with our vehicles
and head back to our hotel to rest. The evening is at leisure .
We wake up easy and after breakfast, will leave to visit the war
cemetery in Kohima and explore the city. After that our vehicles will take us
to Khonoma Village. Estimated to be around 700 years old and spread across 123
sq.km., the village is known for its terraced farming and agriculture. The
village has traditional houses of the Angami Tribe. After strolling and
exploring through the village, we head back to our hotel.
An early breakfast will get all ready for our summit attempt
of Mount Japfu, which is the second
highest point in Nagaland after Mount Saramati (3826m). Even though the
elevation is not too high, be prepared for a steep climb through the forest and
also using help of a rope to climb some rocks just before the summit. We drive to Kigwama village to the starting
point of our trek. We first walk through the agricultural fields and then enter
the rainforest. A little abandoned hut in the forest will be our first stop as we make our way to the ridge.
Fantastic views of the Kohima valley can
be seen from ridge as we make our way to the base of the summit. You
will have to keep track of the guide as there is no trail to follow now. There
are 2 big rocks that have decent footholds for you to climb. A rope has also
been fixed by the locals to help you climb a
one of the rocks. A big cross will greet you at the summit with the magnificent
landscape of the Dzukou and Kohima valley making all the effort worthwhile. Take extra care as you climb down the rocky
part just below the summit. We head back
to Kigwama to our taxis and then back to the hotel for a well deserved rest and celebratory dinner.
An early breakfast will be laid
out and a fixed departure for Dimapur, a 2-3 hour drive. The transfer will
leave at 8 am and we would suggest you take an afternoon flight from Dimapur
for your onward journey. For extended
stay in Nagaland or Meghalaya, please contact our UFO office.
This trip was easily the trip of a lifetime for me and my mom. It will be quite some time before we stop talking about it!! We have a done a lot of travel with each other, but the experience and warmth that we found around every corner on a first ever trip to North East of India, Nagaland were beyond our expectations.
Had a wonderful experience with UFO and their team on the most beautiful treks – The Great Lakes, Kashmir & Mardi Himal trek, Nepal. The team was beyond nice and made sure everybody felt good during the trek. The things that set them apart are their trekking infrastructure, their supporting staff and limited number of people on the trek. They are passionate for trekking and you can feel the efforts these people are taking to make your trek a memorable experience. Overall Courteous, professional, and very safety oriented. I would highly recommend UFO for your adventures.
UFO organised House of Kapaali's Hiking Retreat to Goecha La Pass in Sikkim this April. Sikkim is beyond spectacular and Aatir and his team helped amplify the experience. Look forward to collaborating again soon and make some more mountain madness!
Our representative will get back to you within next 4 working hours and solve all your queries about Goecha la trek

During our adventure holiday in Nagaland, we will stay at a hotel in Kohima for 4 nights and at the state run guesthouse in Dzukou Valley for one night. All accommodation adhere to basic hygiene standards.
Is it safe to travel in Nagaland?
Yes , it is perfectly safe to travel to Nagaland in Northeast India. The state was under civil unrest a decade back but is now peaceful. Naga people are some of the most friendly people you will meet.
How hard is the Dzukou Valley trek?
Dzukou Valley trek is a relatively easy trek. We will climb up from Vishwema village. The first half an hour is steep part as we hike up the forest. But once we reach Dzukou point, it is a gradual walk to the through the bamboo clad Dzukou valley to the guesthouse. This should take arund 3-4 hours from Vishwema. The next day we climb back down to Jakhama village and drive back to Kohima.
Is the Japfu peak trek tough?
Japfu peak, at 3048m, is the second highest point in Nagaland. The hike starts from Kigwama village through the forest. Some parts of the trail are steep till we reach the ridge to the summit. The ridge takes us to the base of the peak as we tackle some boulders to climb our way up. We have to be careful while climbing these boulders. At the top, you get a fantastic view of the Kohima valley and landscape. The trek will take around 7-8 hours in total.
